Understanding Obesity

Obesity is defined as excessive fat tissue accumulation that may impair your health. There are many ways of knowing if your weight falls in the healthy or unhealthy range, but the most common way of checking to see if you are at a healthy weight is calculating your body mass index, or BMI, and waist circumference. If your BMI is >25 you are considered to be overweight and BMI >30 means you have obesity.

Decades of research shows that BMI correlates with health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and death.

Another important way of defining obesity that is not captured by BMI is waist circumference. Even in persons of normal weight, waist size is a marker for increased risk of heart disease, HTN, and DM. This is defined as:

  • men > 40 inches
  • women >35 inches

Professionals at the Vitality Weight Loss Institute will take your waist circumference measurement at least every month to assess progress.

The third way of defining obesity is using body fat percentage. Men with a body fat percentage >25% are considered to have obesity. Women with a body fat percentage of >32% are considered to have obesity.
